Green Transportation

Mission Summary

The ECA Green Transportation WG’s objective is to work with the community, industry, and government to assure that green transportation can be used to meet the needs of the citizens of Etobicoke..

  1. Reduce ICE Emissions.
As we transition to vehicles which do not emit GHGs, work to reduce the emissions from ICE vehicles during that interim phase
  1. Walking and Rolling.
Making sure that our streets and neighbourhoods encourage people to use walking, cycling, skateboards, scooters, etc. as a key part of their transportation for local trips such as shopping or going to school.
    1. This includes the ability to transport a mobility device (assistive devices, bikes, scooters, etc) on public transport
    2. The creation / transformation of neighbourhoods so that residents have much less need for a vehicle.
      1. Room to move – sufficient road and sidewalk space for various modalities.
      2. Real neighbourhoods –  services and business close to where you live.
  2. Transportation Safety.
The ability for these transport options to all be used safely. This includes clarity on rules and enforcement, safety guidelines, and road building standards
  1. Public transit.
    1. Conversion of the fleet to zero emission.
    2. Ensuring that public transit is a realistic solution for all residents.
  2. Zero Emission Vehicles.
Assure we have a strategy you are willing to spend money on, as well as to recognize that in an effort as critical as this, you may need to spend on several strategies and hope that at least one of them pays off.
  1. Scalability. All of the above efforts need to be scalable to meet the goal of zero by 2050

Current and Recent Efforts

  • Newsletter articles (see list below)
  • GIS efforts
    • Last fall we created My Favorite Tree(s) to educate people on how trees help us fight climate change and more. Through a short online survey people can map a Favorite Tree and see that point on a map. Nielsen Park Creative Centre is going to use this activity in June for a Community event.
    • We worked with Friends and Families for Safe Streets to create a website where people can get a better understanding of the safety of our street. They can check whether a pedestrian or cycling crash is part of the TPS Open Data Portal, and if not add their crash to the map. Click here for more info:  Road Traffic Victims Count
    • Bill 54: Protecting Vulnerable Road Users campaign is underway, with over 1,400 emails sent to MPPs. This law will help provide justice to victims and their families through increased penalties for people who injure or kill VRUs.This benefits every single person in Ontario. For more info: Justice of People Hurt on Ontario Roads
    • We have teamed up with Green Neighbours Network (GNN) on a collaborative mapping project that will span 4 wards including Etobicoke Centre.  This will be an online map with green features mapped by Canada Summer Jobs students and also the public. Even though we are in early stages there is already lots of energy and enthusiasm around this initiative.

Upcoming Actions

  • Create an “Achieving Net Zero People Transportation by 2050” report for discussion
  • Figure out and execute an advocacy strategy in support of that report
